After a competitive national search, SUNY Geneseo has named Clifton Harcum as its new director of multicultural affairs, beginning June 22.
As director, Harcum will provide vision and leadership to the range of programs and initiatives aimed to support the retention and success of BIPOC and other underrepresented students, as well as provide student support and follow-through in the aftermath of bias-related incidents. As a part of the Office of Diversity and Equity, he will collaborate with other ODE staff to shape the integration of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging ideals on campus.
Harcum is an accomplished professional with more than 15 years of experience in higher education. Prior to joining Geneseo, he served for three years within SUNY Potsdam’s Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, including two years as the director. In that role, his many contributions earned him the 2020 SUNY Potsdam PRIDE Award for Creativity. Harcum has also received numerous awards for his dedication to local community engagement.
“Clifton impressed the search committee with his ability to develop and implement programs and initiatives that support students from underrepresented backgrounds, helping to ensure that they have equal access to educational opportunities and resources,” says robbie routenberg ’05, chief diversity officer. “I look forward to our community benefiting from his presence.”
Harcum holds a BA in sociology from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and an MS in nonprofit and association management from the University of Maryland Global Campus in Adelphi.
