SUNY Geneseo will offer several new Living-Learning Communities for Fall 2023. The LLCs connect housing and academics into intentional communities that align with student interests and help them develop a sense of belonging.
Kuumba House, located in Onondaga Hall and named for the sixth principle of Kwanzaa, is designed for new students to explore creativity and connect
Gaming LLC, also in Onondaga Hall, is geared toward students interested in building community, well-being, and entrepreneurial skills around video gaming and eSports. Renovated lounge spaces allow students to hang out and practice skills in gaming, graphic design, and technology.
Sensory Retreat LLC, piloted in Putnam Hall for Fall 2023, offers spaces to support individualized sensory needs. Residents may request to have or bring certain items for their rooms (such as rugs, hanging chairs, or blackout curtains). They will have priority access to two quiet, sensory rooms and input on physical changes for the common areas.
Two existing LLCs have also expanded their focus to accommodate growing student interests: the STEM LLC (formerly limited to medical interest students) and the Business and Society LLC (previously for students with entrepreneurial interests).
LLCs provide powerful and lasting benefits for students, says Meg Reitz, associate director of residence life for educational initiatives. For students entering Geneseo in Fall 2015 (the most recent data available), “students participating in our LLCs had an 81% six-year graduation rate, compared to 76% for the average student body. Black and Hispanic students who participated in LLCs had an even higher graduation rate, at 90%.”
