Scott Ewanow ’06 has been appointed chief of the University Police Department (UPD) at SUNY Geneseo. The chief oversees all operational aspects of the department, including the uniformed patrol operations, investigations, and administrative components, including parking and transportation. Ewanow will assume the position of UPD's chief on July 7.
Ewanow, an alum of the College, returned to campus in 2010 as a UPD officer. Over the next decade he rose through the ranks, serving as a lieutenant, inspector, and most recently, assistant chief of police. As the Incident Management Team (IMT) leader and campus safety monitor, he spearheaded the college’s COVID-19 response, which included pooled testing for students and employees, constant monitoring, and strategic shifts in protocols and safety measures. Ewanow is chair of the board of the student-run SUNY Geneseo First Response team.
“Through our search that included finalists from Western New York and SUNY, Scott rose to the top as the best leader to build upon the great work of Geneseo's UPD,” said Michael Taberski, vice president of Student and Campus Life. “Scott’s background and experience have prepared him to be a strong and effective chief. We are especially proud of Scott's community policing philosophy and leadership role with Geneseo's First Response."
Ewanow earned a bachelor’s degree in education with initial certification in adolescence education in social studies from SUNY Geneseo. He graduated from the Broome County Law Enforcement Academy and, in 2019, obtained a graduate certificate in criminal justice education from the FBI National Academy, a rigorous training program that less than one percent of police are invited to attend.
