Founded in 1979, Mt. Hope Family Center is dedicated to helping children and families improve their lives. Through treatment, prevention, research and training in the areas of human development, child maltreatment and mental disorders in children and families, this program provides the resources parents and children need to build strong, healthy family and peer relationships.

While the prevention and intervention services improve family functioning, enhance coping skills and build competence in children, adolescents and parents, research done at this facility analyzes the efficacy of treatments and studies the long-term impact of the program's services as well as the effects of social experiences and environmental influences on development. Mt. Hope Family Center supports the lifelong development of the individual, from infancy to adulthood.

Mt. Hope Family Center focuses on treating the child while helping parents develop the skills they need to understand child development, communicate more effectively, and resolve conflict in non-violent ways. The goal is to break the cycle of maltreatment while working with children and their families to strengthen the family relationship.

Today, the corporation provides children's services including an early childhood program, Project Head Start, School-Age Program Summer Camp, and an in-school early childcare program for children of students completing high school. Residential include a community residence for dependent males, low-income permanent housing, care for homeless veterans, emergency housing individuals and families, a transitional facility for New York State Division of Parole, Federal Corrections Program, an adult living center, and emergency housing programs. Volunteers of America initiated its activities in New York City in 1896 with services for the destitute in the Bowery area. The affiliate has been in operation since its founding, and is Volunteers of America's largest affiliate. Today, the affiliate houses more than 25, homeless individuals and 1,500 homeless families each year and teaches basic skills to more than 400 pre-school children with developmental disabilities. This affiliate is the largest provider of services to troubled youth in New Jersey; distributes holiday food vouchers to needy individuals and families; operates a model program to assist families whose children will be orphaned when one or both parents dies from HIV/AIDS; and provides shelter for more than 2,600 needy individuals every night.
