Student Teaching & Field Experience Updates

The New York Board of Regents met on September 14 and approved two actions that affect candidates completing certification programs and seeking certification in New York State.

The Regents approved the extension of the "safety net" option in place of the edTPA certification exam.  Students in our teacher education program who complete student teaching during the 2020-2021 academic year are eligible for the safety net.  The safety net provision is described at http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/certexamsafetynetedtpa-2020.html.  However, the information on the webpage says that the safety net applies only to those who completed student teaching in the spring or summer of 2020.  The September 14 action by the Regents extends this mechanism/procedure through the end of the 2020-2021 academic year.

The Regents also approved an extension of the emergency COVID-19 certificate.  Again, the information related to the emergency certificate is available at http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/covid19-emergency.html although the deadline is identified as September 1, 2020.  The Regents' action extends the deadline to September 1, 2021.

We continue to monitor for guidance from NYSED related to certification, certification examinations, field experience and student teaching alternatives, and other impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

We are also working with school partners to make accommodations so Geneseo teacher candidates can interact with K-12 students in ways that meet the intent and letter of any regulatory requirements.

As new information becomes available, we will continue to use this web page for information and we will notify everyone of such updates by email messages.
