Spring semester classes underway; Inauguration Week activities to include public readings of core democratic documents

GENESEO, N.Y. – Spring semester classes are underway and the college has scheduled several Inauguration Day-related events prior to the presidential swearing-in ceremony Jan. 20.

Students, faculty and administrators from the college as well as members of the community will present daily public readings of key democratic documents Tuesday through Thursday (Jan. 17-19) at noon. Some of the readings will be outside at the corner of Main St. and Bank St. (near the bear fountain) and others will be inside the Village Courtroom at 119 Main St. The readings will last about 15 minutes and participants will be handing out copies of the U.S. Constitution.

Among those scheduled to read Tuesday at noon are SUNY Geneseo President Denise Battles and Geneseo Mayor Richard Hatheway. They will read outside at Main St. and Bank St. Reading in the Village Courtroom Tuesday at noon will be student Sasha Miller, president of Students Against Social Injustice; student Bryan Somar, vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; and from the community, Tim Hayes, superintendent of Geneseo Central Schools..

Readers scheduled to read Wednesday at noon include Geneseo Town Supervisor Will Wadsworth and Jennifer Katz, professor of psychology, who will read in the Village Courtroom. At the same time, the college’s interim provost, Paul Schacht, and community member Jim DeCort from the VFW are scheduled to read outside at Main St. and Bank St.

On Thursday at noon, college students and Village of Geneseo Trustees Mathew Cook and Mary Rutigliano are scheduled to read. Cook will join community member and author Meredith Drake in reading in the Village Courtroom.  Rutigliano will outside at Main St. and Bank St.

The college’s first All-College Hour gathering Jan. 18 will feature a panel titled “Democracy, Justice and the Implications of the 2016 Election.” On the panel will be faculty members Amanda Roth (philosophy), Scott Giorgis (geological sciences), Joe Cope (history) and Justin Behrend (history).

Both the readings and the All-College Hour event are open to the public.
