Computing and Information Technology’s gPrint system is helping to reduce waste on campus.
It is part of CIT’s ongoing Printing Improvement Initiative, which makes printing better for the entire campus community — and is environmentally conscious.
Students now add their documents or images to be printed to a cloud queue, and go to a printer to manually release their print jobs. When they are logged into the system, students can see a balance of their print jobs, and cancel or choose them. Jobs stay active in the system for four hours and students can pick up their printing job from any computer linked to the gPrint system.
Nik Varrone, support services manager, estimates the college has saved thousands of pieces of paper per week in Milne library alone. During one week last fall, staff picked up more than 7,000 sheets of abandoned prints. “Currently, we see less than 100 and we are working hard to take that number to zero,” says Varone.
