Geneseo has fared well on Business First's just-released public college survey, ranking 52nd nationally and 15th in the eastern region.

SUNY Geneseo is on a new list of the nation’s top public colleges, ranking 52nd out of 485 four-year public institutions in the country and 15th among the 74 eastern region colleges on the survey, compiled by Business First, a Buffalo-based publication. The 2018 survey results were based on academic excellence, affordability, diversity and economic strength.

Among New York’s public colleges in the survey, Geneseo ranks fifth in the regional rankings after SUNY’s four University Centers, the highest among SUNY’s four-year comprehensive colleges.

The study employed a methodology based on a wide array of the latest data from the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. A 22-part formula pinpointed the public universities and colleges that offer the best educational experiences to their students. It gave the highest marks to schools with highly selective admissions processes, strong retention and graduation rates, impressive earnings by alumni, generous resources, affordable tuitions and housing costs, diverse faculties and student bodies, and economically robust communities.

“Geneseo continues to offer students a high quality educational experience at a very affordable cost,” said Meaghan Arena, Geneseo’s vice president for enrollment management. “Alumni frequently tell us how well the College prepared them for the next phase of their careers, and surveys such as this reflect those sentiments, which pleases us greatly.”

The University of Michigan was the top-ranked college in the survey, followed by the University of North Carolina.
