The first in a new series of “Cultivating Community” events to support Geneseo’s core values of diversity and inclusivity is scheduled Feb. 28 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the MacVittie College Ballroom.
“Making Geneseo Feel Like Home for Everyone: What Do I Need and What Can We Do?” is the topic of the first of three such events this semester. Fatima Rodriguez Johnson, assistant dean of students for multicultural programs and services, and Beth McCoy, Distinguished Teaching Professor of English, will share their expertise on creating inclusive environments, followed by group discussions on the theme led by skilled facilitators.
“Cultivating Community sessions will provide opportunities for our campus community to come together to support the college’s value of inclusivity through the process of mindful dialogue,” said President Denise A. Battles. “The goal of the series is to enhance our understanding of and respect for diversity, and will encourage the identification of common ground upon which we can work to strengthen our community. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone involved in organizing these important sessions in the life of our campus and encourage participation by students, faculty and staff. ”
Meredith Harrigan, associate professor of communication, is coordinating the series. To support the interactive group discussion portion of the programs, Jennifer Katz, professor of psychology, is providing professional development workshops for individuals seeking to hone their facilitation skills.
Two other “Cultivating Community” sessions are scheduled this semester: March 22 and May 1. Speakers and topics of those session are to be determined but both also are scheduled from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the MacVittie College Ballroom.
