Alexander Ruiz '24 has been elected as the SUNY Student Assembly president.
His one-year term begins June 1. As president, Ruiz will lead Student Assembly members representing the 64 SUNY campuses, advocating for the needs and concerns of students. The assembly bridges students, the chancellor, and the Board of Trustees. Ruiz will also serve as a student member on the SUNY Board of Trustees.
Ruiz, a political science major minoring in ethics, has served as Geneseo Student Association president for the 2022-23 academic year. The association oversees more than 54 clubs and organizations on campus. In this role, he has also served as a member of the College Council.
Ruiz says he sought the presidency to share Geneseo students' concerns and voices directly, instead of having others speak on their behalf.
"The best form of advocacy stems from creating the platform in which we are allowed to execute," says Ruiz. "It comes with great pride to be the first to represent my community at the levels I have, but this progress will not derail after my time here. I hope my work serves as foundational tools for future generations of leaders to inherit."
