As an adjunct lecturer at SUNY Geneseo, Ken Luk teaches private lessons (guitar and mandolin) and the American Folk Guitar class.

 As a guitarist, teacher, and an arranger, Ken Luk actively performs in different solo and chamber music settings. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ken studied with Dr. Nicholas Goluses and finished his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music. Prior to his doctoral studies, Ken earned a Master of Art degree in Music Theory Pedagogy at Eastman. As one of the cofounders of Rochester Classical Guitar, he organizes various events to help promote classical guitar in the Greater Rochester Area. Ken is an avid arranger of the guitar, and was a finalist in the Roland Dyens Arranging International Competition 2017. Ken enjoys playing chamber music, and has performed and arranged music for guitar and various instruments. In February 2019, Ken cofounded the Rochester Mandolin Orchestra and organizes monthly meetings for mandolinists and guitarists of the Greater Rochester Area. Apart from the classical guitar repertoire, Ken has strong interests in and frequently performs music of Brazil, Indonesia, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe. Ken also teaches music theory at the Eastman School of Music, Balinese gamelan at the Eastman Community Music School and State University of New York at Fredonia, and guitar and mandolin at Alfred University.

  • MUSC 144: Strings Gen: Guitar

    Instruction in violin, viola, cello, or double-bass intended for the general student.

  • MUSC 154: Strings Perf: Guitar

    Instruction in selected string instruments designed for those admitted to the Performance Option-String.

  • MUSC 175: American Folk Guitar I

    An intensive semester designed to provide the student with traditional techniques of accompanying folk songs on the six-string guitar. Instruction is adapted to beginners, and no previous experience is necessary.

  • MUSC 189: Elements of Music Theory

    An introduction to musical rudiments and practical musicianship. Rudiments including scales, keys, chord construction, meter and rhythm, and cadential patterns are addressed from a theoretical perspective as well as through practical exercises in solfège, aural skills and basic music writing. Prospective music majors should take MUSC 139 in the same semester as MUSC 189. An ability to read music fluently is required.
