Little Free Thoughts Library

A Message from the Creator:

Oftentimes when I journal, I feel more alone. Although I am getting my feelings out on paper, only the paper knows these feelings. Granted, I could share these feelings directly with others, but sometimes that is just uncomfortable. Therefore, I want to create a safe space where individuals can anonymously journal and share their feelings with peers without direct contact”.

Mission Statement

The Little Free Thoughts Project seeks to create an outlet where students can connect anonymously through modalities of drawing, sketching, journaling, and writing. The project strives to create a sense of community on campus for students to feel surrounded by support by building upon entries, responding to entries, and generating awareness of thoughts.

Message of Respect and Information Regarding Trigger Warnings:

Reading and creating are suggested at your own risk. There will not be any filters for triggering information, seeing as the goal is for students to have complete freedom in this project. However, routine checks of books will take place to make sure no discriminatory entries, suggestive information, or revealing aspects are present. In order to reduce this responsibility, please be mindful and conscious of your peers when writing or creating. Additionally, peers entrust you to be respectful of their work, so the publication of entries on any sort of social media is highly discouraged. If evidence of bullying occurs, further investigation will take place for our participants’ safety. While this project aims to maintain anonymity, we hope to develop a way for student creators to connect through the project. More details will be coming soon!

Message of Sustainability:

The project aims to maintain respect towards our home that is Earth. Therefore, all supplies provided are sourced from recycled and/or natural materials. While we hope to expand the materials, we will always keep sustainability in mind. Additionally, to support this aspect, we encourage you to please take only a few supplies and always return them. We encourage you to use any other materials you own! Since the sketchbooks and journals are the main aspects of the project, please be mindful of when you take them and when you return them, including maintaining proper treatment of the materials to reduce damage. We want these to last forever, to create a library collection of student thoughts!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it?

Inspired by the multitude of Little Free Libraries across the nation, the LFT Library is a bookshelf housing student creations, words, thoughts and more in a wonderful collection of shared books. One could say a collective brain of SUNY Geneseo.

Where is it?

Located in the GOLD Room 114 of the MacVittie College Union.

When can the LFT Library be accessed?

Students can drop by during GOLD Mentor office hours which are from 11 am – 5 pm! Please drop in and explore, create, and read. Mentors will be there to assist you if necessary.

When will students be able to begin adding entries?

Opening day is Monday, January 31, 2022!

Is the library anonymous?

The LFT Library is currently 100% anonymous. Any personal information included will be torn out or blacked out.

How will the cycling of materials work?

We aim for this project to be a continuous transaction, where you take a book for a day or two, create your thought, and return the book. Materials will also work this way. Once you have added your thought, take another book to simply browse through, or add another entry too. Repeat!

Is the LFT Library a safe space?

The LFT Library seeks to maintain a safe environment for students using and contributing to the collection. Therefore, regular check-ins of all books will be conducted by LFT Library team members for inappropriate entries or potentially harmful entries

Can anyone add entries?

ANY AND ALL are welcome and highly encouraged to contribute. Our motto is the more the merrier, so we hope almost all SUNY Geneseo students are aware of this resource and contribute.

What should the entries be about?

Entries can be about anything you set your mind to. Whether that be a poem, brief description of your day, a rant, a cartoon sketch, music lyrics, etc. Do you want to contemplate the existence of aliens? Go for it. Do you want to obsess over Harry Styles? Be our guest. Do you want to practice your human anatomy drawings? Please do!

How can I get in contact with the LFT Library team members?

Our email is freethoughts@geneseo.edu

Do you have social media?

Yes! Find us on Instagram @Littlefreethoughtsgeneseo. We plan to highlight some of our favorite entries each week, so stay updated.

Are you looking for student volunteers/helpers to manage the LFT Library

We are always looking for help! Those who feel particularly inspired and want to expand their contribution to the LFT Library are encouraged to email with any questions.

How often will you restock materials?

This really depends on how many students participate in the project and how students treat the materials! Therefore, please keep respect in mind when handling the materials.

Can I contribute my own resources to the LFT Library?

We will be very appreciative of students who choose to donate supplies to the project, whether that be old sketchbooks, markers, notepads. However, please contact the LFT Library through email or Instagram asking for clearance before dropping off any supplies.

Will the LFT Library be successful?

That is up to you and your peers! Of course, we would love for this to be successful, so much that other colleges implement this same idea, but we need your support and involvement! We thank you in advance.
