- B.A degree with NYS Adolescence Education certification for those interested in being a chemistry teacher

- ACS-Certified B.S. in Chemistry

The ACS-certified Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program emphasizes laboratory and advanced courses that prepare students for careers in chemical research, laboratory work, or master’s and doctoral programs in the chemical sciences. It is intended for those who wish to obtain a degree certified by a professional organization and can lead to careers in the pharmaceutical industry, environmental testing, laboratory research, and health professions.

- B.A. in Chemistry

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry provides flexibility in the study of chemistry and is recommended for students preparing for secondary certification, dual majors, or those planning to pursue graduate work outside of chemical sciences (e.g., law, M.B.A., public policy). The flexibility of this program is also suitable for students transferring from other colleges who wish to pursue a degree in Chemistry. Graduates from the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry also pursue health profession degrees and other chemistry-related graduate degrees.

Geneseo has a long history providing excellent training for those interested in becoming a high school chemistry teacher. Students seeking Initial Certification in Adolescence Education must complete the requirements for a BA in addition to the requirements set forth in the School of Education program description.

This program allows students to earn a BA in Chemistry from Geneseo and a BS in Chemical Engineering degree from SUNY Buffalo, Clarkson University, or Columbia University. Students complete 3 years at Geneseo and 2 years at the partner institution.

The minor in Chemistry provides students with a basic understanding of the structure and behavior of matter at the atomic and molecular level. Students complete advanced electives in an area of their choosing.

The interdepartmental degree in Biochemistry stresses basic science and analytical skills. Extensive laboratory experience is acquired making use of the modern instrumentation in both the Biology and Chemistry departments. Graduates of this program are well prepared for employment in the fields of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, and Molecular Biology. The program also provides excellent preparation for the pursuit of advanced academic or professional degrees.

The Neuroscience Program is an interdisciplinary major supported by the Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry Departments that is designed to prepare students for graduate study, medical school, and careers focused on neuroscience research. This program emphasizes research methods and the practical application of those methods to the process of scientific discovery.
Cannot be used as a second major with Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Psychology.

This program provides a background in Geological Sciences and Chemistry as well as related areas such as Physics and Mathematics. The synthesis of these interrelated disciplines will prepare the student for graduate-level study and a professional career in geochemistry or related fields

Courses
The courses offered range from introductory courses in general and organic chemistry, to foundational courses in five chemistry subdisciplines (analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical), and advanced electives in multiple areas of current interest (eg, anticancer therapeutics, nanoscience, organometallics, instrumental analysis). Many students also choose to do research, which can meet laboratory requirements and provides hands-on experience that is vital in the development of a chemist.

Honors Program
The Department offers an Honors Research program. All chemistry and biochemistry majors with senior-standing and a 3.5 or greater GPA in chemistry classes are eligible. Honors students participate in a cutting-edge multi-semester research project with a faculty mentor, and write and defend an Honor's Thesis. Information about ACS Certification
The American Chemical Society (ACS) degree certification is widely recognized program certification that ensures that the chemistry department's curriculum with respect to its breadth and depth, the qualifications of the chemistry faculty, the adequacy of the facilities, condition of instrumentation, access to current chemical literature, and opportunities for a meaningful research experience are aligned with best practices designed to prepare students for success in a broad array of careers. The ACS-certified BS degree in Chemistry does not meet any professional licensure or professional certification requirements in New York.
