Prenatal and Perinatal THC
The use of recreational and medical marijuana in the United States will continue to increase as a result of the legalization trend. Of particular concern are possible long-term effects on brain function if exposure to cannabinoids occurs during critical periods of fetal or adolescent brain development. Our current research uses a rat model to examine the effects of one of the most potent cannabinoids (THC) on cognitive, motor, and affective behaviors throughout the life span following THC exposure during early development. Learning and memory behaviors are examined with operant conditioning and novel object recognition procedures. Motor assessments include forelimb grip strength, Rotarod, and open field activity. The elevated plus maze is used to assess anxiety.
